The tournament attracted 16 teams from eight clubs, however, that was not the case with spectators as many of them stayed away. The host, Gaborone Hogs men’s team did not allow the bad weather to affect their winning streak, as they lifted the cup after beating Jwaneng Wildebeest 28-5. Hogs walked into the tournament with revenge in mind after losing the 15s league title to BDF Cheetahs in August, on the other hand the side has been a 7s powerhouse.
On their way to the final, Hogs walloped Canon Jaguars 17-5, in the second match, Hogs walloped Cheetahs 14-0, and went on to punish Hogs 2 with a huge margin of 40-0.
Hogs coach, Vuyo Moyo told Sport Monitor that they are 7s specialists.
He explained that the plan coming into the tournament was to have total dominance, put pressure on the opposition when defending and keep the ball when attacking.
Moyo added that losing the league to Cheetahs was also a motivation because they wanted it.
“In the morning it was a bit scrappy, the ball was wet, so the game was a bit slow. We were the defending champions, we knew how to win the tournament and my players executed the plan to perfection.
“We now have to look forward to our next challenge which will be in Pretoria in November,” he said.
The women’s champions are Cheetahs, losing one 7s match this season. Cheetahs won all the matches that were played in round robin system, beating Hogs 10-7, Rhinos 10-5, Hogs 17-5 and Rhinos 17-0.
Cheetahs spokesperson, Modesto Mazambi, said it has been a good season for the women’s team, finishing in position two at Gabs Open losing to Tuks University from South Africa. The side went on to win the Jwaneng 7s tournament.
“We were a bit scrappy because we had four players out of action due to injuries, we gave other a chance who did well. The side that has been troubling us has been Rhinos, but this season we have beaten them in all our outings,” he said.
“Hogs has shown improvement, that is good for competition. We are united, play as a team and we have good support from BDF command.”
Mazambi said they are able to stamp their authority because they have strong, quick backline, with Thato Thutwane who is a good runner.
He said the forwards are tough, and they are hard workers and the technical bench has changed the training programme including increasing gym sessions.
