He explained that said they received a report around 1am from individuals residing next to the ex-minister’s farm who allegedly heard a gunshot coming from his yard.

“Police rushed to the scene and, upon arrival, found blood stains in the sitting room.

“When they proceeded to check other rooms, they found the former minister alone in his bedroom with severe facial injuries. A firearm was found in the sitting room,” Zilawe said.

He added that De Graaff was initially rushed to Gantsi Primary Hospital before being referred to Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone for further medical attention.

Zilawe said preliminary investigations suggest that De Graaff may have attempted to shoot himself, as no signs of foul play were detected at the scene.

“He sustained serious injuries to the face, and at this point, we suspect an attempted suicide. However, investigations are ongoing to establish what might have led to his actions,” he added.

De Graaff, who once served as Minister of Agriculture under former president Ian Khama’s administration, has been a well-known figure in Botswana’s political landscape for many years.

Police say further updates on the matter will be provided as investigations continue.
