Palapye Police Station commander, Superintendent Koziba Phuluweni, said both cars were stolen whilst parked at their owners’ homes at night.

The owners reportedly woke up to find their vehicles missing.

“In the first incident, a Honda Fit was stolen whilst parked in a yard at Serorome ward and was later found abandoned in Tamasane village.

“We are still investigating how it ended up there and the motive behind the theft,” Phuluweni explained.

Whilst investigations into the first case were still ongoing, a second Honda Fit was stolen under similar circumstances. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in the lands near Bobonong village.

“Residents in that area told police that the car had been driven by a light-skinned man with tattoos, who reportedly left it behind after it ran out of fuel,” Phuluweni added.

He said police investigations led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Ogodile ward in Sefophe, who is currently in custody assisting with investigations.

The suspect, who has several pending cases before court, which include house breaking, theft, and rape, was already on bail for a rape charge he committed years ago in Bobonong.

“He was also wanted after a warrant of arrest was recently issued against him for failing to appear before court for his rape trial,” Phuluweni said.

He cautioned motorists, particularly owners of Honda Fit vehicles, to be vigilant and take extra security measures, warning that thefts involving the model seem to be spreading in the area.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the thefts and whether they are linked to a broader criminal network,” he said.

“In the meantime, we plead with motorists to install security devices like alarms and others into their vehicles to tighten the security of their vehicles.”
