Confirming the incident, Southern Divisional Traffic Officer, Assistant Commissioner Boiki Mojalemotho said the fatal accident occurred around 5:45 pm, about four kilometres from Hatsalatladi village.
“The 35-year-old truck driver reported that whilst driving, the steering wheel suddenly failed to respond, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and hit the pedestrian who was walking by the roadside,” Mojalemotho said.
He added that the pedestrian died instantly at the scene. Mojalemotho further stated that police have since launched investigations to establish whether the vehicle indeed had a mechanical fault or if other factors contributed to the accident.
He urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times to prevent such tragedies.
