Tutume young woman dies in suspected botched abortion

The tragic incident occurred last Saturday at the deceased’s rented house in Mogoditshane, Block 9. Confirming the incident, No.13 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Mmoloke Sebako, said the deceased was discovered by her neighbour after she had heard screaming from her house.
“The neighbour said she heard the woman screaming and asked if she was okay. The deceased responded that she was fine, but later went quiet for some time, which made the neighbour concerned,” Sebako said.
He explained that when the neighbour tried calling the woman, there was no response.
“She tried to open the bathroom door, but it was locked. Looking through the window, she saw the woman lying on the floor. Neighbours then forcefully opened the door and found her lying in a pool of blood,” Sebako added.
Police were called to the scene and, upon arrival, found the young woman lifeless with a fetus lying beside her, leading them to strongly suspect that she had been attempting to terminate her pregnancy.
Sebako said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the suspected abortion. The body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
