Jamataka chief disappointed by poor Independence Day turnout

Addressing a handful of villagers who attended, Kgosi Goitseone said it was disheartening that less than 20 residents mostly elderly turned up for the event. He noted that while government had not provided an official budget for this year’s celebrations and there was no food as in previous years, it was still important for people to show up and honour the day.

“It is very worrisome and embarrassing that when it comes to an important occasion such as Independence Day, we fail to come together. Yet, when Ipeleng is hiring, the kgotla is always full,” he lamented.

The chief reminded villagers that Independence Day is not only about food and entertainment, but about unity and national pride. Quoting a Setswana proverb, “bana ba motho ba kgaogana thogo ya ntsi,” he urged residents to embrace the spirit of sharing and turn up regardless of how little has been prepared.

Kgosi Goitseone further questioned whether the poor attendance was a sign that people no longer valued Independence Day celebrations or that they were failing to take pride in their own village.

He called on Jamataka residents to reflect on the significance of the day and ensure that future celebrations are better attended, saying unity at village level is key to building a stronger nation.
