OLDM General Manager, Mogakolodi Maoketsa, said the industry has been challenged by the increasing appeal of synthetic diamonds, higher extraction costs, and slower economic growth in major markets.
“People are buying synthetic diamonds at lower prices, and the global economy is struggling. That is why our sales have dropped,” he said.
Despite these conditions, he expressed confidence that Orapa would maintain its central role in the country’s production.
“We will come back,” Maoketsa added.
Orapa accounts for a large share of Debswana’s diamond output, providing both revenue for the company and foreign exchange for Botswana. Analysts note that the mine’s continued production is critical for maintaining the country’s global standing in the diamond market.
The mine’s impact extends beyond production. OLDM supports surrounding communities with essential services such as healthcare, water provision, and infrastructure projects. Maoketsa said the mine’s presence directly contributes to local livelihoods.
“These achievements show that Debswana is not only about mining diamonds. We are also about making life better for the people of Botswana,” he said.
Looking ahead, Orapa is positioned to support Botswana’s economic diversification efforts. Debswana has developed initiatives such as the Orapa Game Park and the Adrian Gale Museum to boost tourism and cultural heritage activities. These projects are intended to create alternative revenue streams and prepare communities for a future less dependent on mining.
International marketing of Botswana’s diamonds remains a priority. Maoketsa highlighted the importance of ethical sourcing and sustainable production to differentiate the country’s natural stones from synthetic alternatives.
“When people buy a Botswana diamond, we want them to know they are not just making a transaction; they are also buying our story, our heritage, and our future,” he said.
Despite uncertainties in the global market, Orapa’s operations are expected to remain a cornerstone of Botswana’s diamond sector. The mine’s production, community support, and strategic initiatives highlight its ongoing role in sustaining both the industry and the country’s economic stability.
