I do not have a problem with Independence Day not being celebrated at the kgotla like it is normally done, and I do not have a problem with the issue of Independence Day not being celebrated as usual. I normally spend Independence Day in Gaborone watching football with my peers, but I strongly feel that it is not okay for some people, as they are used to eating at dikgotla on the day.

It is very heartbreaking for me since there will not be any celebration. I normally celebrate the day at Oodi Kgotla with other community members, eating, rejoicing, and having fun.

Things have changed drastically, especially after the country was hit by COVID-19; therefore, it is very hard for us as a country to partake in certain things like we normally do. We, as the public, should appreciate every little effort the government is putting forth and accept that there will not be any celebration.

As old as I am, I am used to festive gatherings during this time, as we all know that it highlights the struggles that had to be endured to be an independent nation. We, as the public, should put our heads together and find suitable ways to celebrate the day, be it by donating or contributing the little one has to ensure the day is celebrated at large. Independence Day brings people together through instilling peace and unity amongst different communities; therefore, we, as the old, have a responsibility to show the young ones what celebrating Independence Day really means.
