Khama told his subjects last weekend that everyone from the past administration led by former president Mokgweetsi Masisi is all gone except for Magosi. “Go setse e one hela,” he said. Khama has, in the past, not shied away from revealing how the DIS led by Magosi participated in persecuting him and his family during the height of his feud with Masisi.

Khama, who blames Masisi and Magosi for forcing him into self-exile between 2021 and 2024, told Bangwato that the regime change last year took out everyone, but Magosi is the only one remaining. Khama was speaking at Kgosi Sediegeng Kgamane’s ceremony held at Serowe Main Kgotla.

Khama was quick to compare the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government to a tractor, which is responsible for planting and making sure that people harvest and feed. “President Duma Boko and Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe’s government is trying to make sure that Batswana are fed and have decent lives. The government is our tractor,” he said. Khama indicated that Magosi is the only one remaining from the past administration and is likely to be a hindrance to the new government.

Khama used the metaphor to paint Magosi as an impediment to the new government. Speaking in parables, Khama said that usually there is a stone that is put in the ploughing field to break the plough and delay the planting season. “We do not want those kinds of people in this government,” he said. He encouraged Bangwato to take care of their fields and prevent enemies from putting stones in the fields.

Earlier this year, Khama hinted that his successor, former president Masisi, and Magosi are the two main culprits who necessitated the forensic audit, which seeks to uncover corruption and identify responsible parties for legal action.

Khama told Ntlo Ya Dikgosi then that two main perpetrators of abuse of office in government brought about the situation that necessitated a forensic audit. In a question he posed to the Minister for State President, Khama said one perpetrator exited government on October 30, 2024, but the other continued in his position in government to abuse his office into 2025.

But Khama’s wait for Magosi to exit office might be longer because President Boko, a confessed ‘wounded healer', has defended his choices, stating that his government is not of vengeance and partisanship. When Boko took over, many expected heads to start rolling, with multiple senior officials fired, reassigned, or even designated to be laid off, Magosi amongst those.

In response, President Boko said he has not fired some of the loyalists of the former regime because they are ‘performing’ well and that getting rid of them could destabilise governance. With many people like Khama calling for the DIS boss' exit, Magosi himself has previously emphasised that he serves at the pleasure of the President.

“That’s the reality of my job. I’ve always known that. But let me be clear: I am not loyal to the man; I am loyal to the seat. I’ve always been that way. It’s the position of the President that matters, not the individual occupying it. I was loyal to Masisi when he was President, just as I am now loyal to President Boko. That’s how the system works,” he indicated. Magosi facilitated the power exchange last year when the Botswana Democratic Party lost to the UDC.
