The contribution included brooms, mops, pine gel, liquid bleach, gloves and other supplies aimed at improving the school’s hygiene and sanitation. Lucretia Chima, chairperson of Baitshepi Social Club, said the donation was part of the group’s ongoing support for Macheng JSS.

“We have adopted this school and will continue to support the staff and learners in ways that can make a practical difference,” she said during the handover ceremony last weekend.

For her part, Oratile Baloi from SmartSwitch highlighted the importance of partnerships in addressing school needs.

“Providing these materials helps the school maintain a clean and safe environment for learners,” she said.

“We are happy to contribute to efforts that improve daily conditions at Macheng JSS.”

Headteacher for Macheng JSS, Shadrack Keatlholetswe, thanked the donors, emphasising how the supplies would support both pupils and staff.

“Our school faces multiple challenges, from limited resources to infrastructural difficulties. These cleaning materials will go a long way in ensuring a healthier environment for everyone here,” he said.

Macheng JSS, located at Sojwe village which is about 123km from Molepolole, serves over 800 students, most of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to Keatlholetswe, 95% of learners are under the social worker programme, and many parents struggle to meet school-related expenses.

The school has historically faced shortages of basic items such as stationery and cleaning supplies.

“Maintaining hygiene in a boarding school is challenging, especially when resources are limited.

“Donations like these help relieve some of that pressure and allow the staff to focus on teaching and supporting learners,” Keatlholetswe added.

The school also faces ongoing issues such as a shortage of stationery.

Keatlholetswe concluded by encouraging other organisations to support schools in rural areas.

“Every contribution counts. Collaborative efforts like this help ensure that learners can focus on their education and develop under better conditions,” he said. Baitshepi Social Club has previously supported Macheng JSS in other ways, including donations of toiletries, and has indicated that the school will remain part of its community outreach initiatives.
