The Monday deadline marked a significant milestone as the party moves closer to selecting a candidate for the upcoming by-election in the constituency.
The vacancy followed the passing on of Dr Micus Chimbombi, who was Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.
Initially, the BNF Central Committee had planned to meet with local structures and potential candidates last Friday.
However, according to party chairperson Moses Bantsi, the visit was postponed to allow the application process to conclude first.
“We are going this Friday, and only then will we know exactly who we’re dealing with since officially registered aspirants will be present,” he said.
In a recent interview, Bantsi expressed concern over the unexpectedly high number of individuals seeking to contest the primaries.
Reports from party structures indicate that nearly five candidates have shown serious interest.
Bantsi noted that whilst this reflects political engagement, it also raises concerns for the party's internal stability.
“As the Central Committee, we feel that five is quite a high number.
“Primaries that draw large numbers tend to bring tension. Unfortunately, not everyone accepts defeat easily, and this often leads to internal divisions,” he said.
The BNF chairperson warned that such divisions can weaken the party’s chances at general election, as some members may refuse to support the eventual winner.
“Whilst primary elections do promote democracy, they come with challenges. Members must be reminded that the party’s interest comes first. Our priority is to retain the constituency, and that can only happen if we stand together,” he added.
Despite these concerns, Bantsi remains optimistic, as he believes the BNF stands a strong chance of reclaiming the seat but emphasised the need for thorough groundwork and preparation.
“We are not taking anything for granted. The constituency and regional committees are fully active on the ground and understand the local dynamics,” he said.
As the party gears up for Friday’s engagements, all eyes are now on the Kgalagadi South constituency, a key battleground that could test the party’s unity and strategic strength.
