GIMC pays tribute to ATI

The event was held on Saturday at the Bojanala Waterfront. ATI, who died last Sunday, was buried on Saturday in Lerala village. While Batswana have throughout the week celebrated the life and legacy of ATI, various artists took to the stage to pay their respects to the multi-talented music icon. Artists, including DJ Lefatshe, Encore, Women of Jazz, Sereetsi & The Natives, and Mafikizolo, dedicated their performances to ATI, showcasing the profound influence he had on Botswana's music landscape. While most of the artists performed some of ATI's most popular songs, such as Khiring Khorong, Mafikizolo performed their 2003 hit, Emlanjeni, as a dedication to ATI. Mafikizolo had previously sung the song to pay tribute to their late founding member, Tebogo Madingoane, who was gunned down in Soweto after a road rage incident in 2004. The song combines both sadness and joy. ATI's impact on the music industry and his fans will not be forgotten.

Meanwhile, the GIMC jazz lived up to the hype as revellers were treated to beautiful performances by artists. It was also a special moment when South African singer Lira performed, making a return to the local stage after some years. This return to the stage comes after she suffered a life-altering stroke in 2022, which impacted her ability to speak, read, and write. 'It's been three and a half years since I performed. I am happy to be alive, and it's good to be here talking and performing to you,' Lira said.
