One goal in each half saw the national football team go down 2-0 in Maputo.

However, the Zebras gave out a gallant fight, which saw Mozambican goalkeeper making crucial saves to deny the likes of Mothusi Cooper from scoring on several occasions.

The defeat now means Mozambique have completed a double over the Zebras after registering a 3-2 win in Francistown two years ago.

Ahead of the international break, Zebras were sitting at position three in Group G with nine points. They travelled to Algiers to face off with group leaders, Algeria.

Despite putting out a battle, they went on to lose 3-1. Against Mozambique, the Zebras gave away an early goal after losing out possession in the middle of the par. They also conceded the second goal in almost the same fashion.

With two rounds of matches now remaining for Zebras, six points will not be enough to book a flight to the biggest football stage.

Group leaders, Algeria already were at 18 points before their match against Guinea later yesterday.

Nine group leaders automatically book a ticket to the World Cup finals while four best runners up will go for play-offs.

The Zebras will host Uganda next month before they travel to Guinea for the last round of matches. Head coach, Morena Ramoreboli, can draw positives from the setback as preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals intensify.

He gave Keeagile Kgosipula a start ahead of Kabelo Dambe and Goitseone Phoko yesterday as he continues to set up a team that will travel to Morocco at the end of the year.
