Trio pulls away at the top

Galaxy, the three-time champions, have wasted no time in flexing their muscles. Sitting top of the log on goal difference, they remain one of only two teams yet to concede this season. Their campaign began with a convincing 3-0 win over Morupule Wanderers, followed by a narrow 1-0 against Black Lions, before dismantling Orapa United 3-0 in midweek. Captain Thabang Sesinyi marked the occasion with his 100th Premier League goal, sealing his place amongst centurions. Under new coach Sean Connor, the Galaxy Stars look calm, clinical, and ready for another title tilt. Hot on their heels are Township Rollers. Written off by many after finishing a disappointing sixth last season and dealing with messy boardroom drama, Popa have bounced back under the experienced Serbian, Srdan Zivojnov. Rollers have found a cutting edge again, scoring six goals in three matches whilst conceding only twice. The only worry? All six goals have come after the break, raising questions about their slow starts in their matches. Still, the Rollers faithful would not mind; victories are flowing, and belief is creeping back into the terraces. Completing the leading trio are Sua Flamingoes, who continue their steady rise since breaking into the elite in 2020. Bafana Ba Letswai dug deep in Francistown to edge TAFIC 1-0 in midweek, courtesy of a second-half strike by Bame Morwalela. Head coach Nikola Kavazovic has been blunt about his intentions that this season is about chasing the league crown, not applause for attractive football. His words are being matched by results with three wins from three, nine points on the board, and title ambitions well and truly alive.

Not far behind, reigning champions Gaborone United sit in fourth spot. GU were held to a 1-1 draw by Nico United but responded in style by smashing debutants Santa Green 6-1 in midweek. Mochudi Centre Chiefs, also unbeaten, trail in fifth after their own 6-1 rout of Calendar Stars was followed by a goalless draw with Nico. Both clubs are expected to muscle their way into the title chase as the season unfolds.

Another dark horse could be BDF XI. Under Mogomotsi 'Teenage' Mpote, the army side is blending youth with experience and has shown early signs of resilience. With matches in hand, they already sit in the top half and could emerge as spoilers in the title race.

Nico United deserves a nod too, unbeaten after three rounds, quietly picking up points against the big names. TAFIC rounds off the top half with four points.

At the lower end, the picture is gloomier. Orapa United, once the feared Ostriches, is yet to win and has just a single point to show from three outings. Pressure is mounting on head coach Elias Chinyemba, whose job is already said to be hanging by a thread. Extension Gunners, Police XI, Matebele FC, and Morupule Wanderers are still winless, and all four risk being sucked into an early relegation scrap.

The newcomers have endured mixed fortunes. Santa Green, nicknamed the Veggies, tasted their first defeat in midweek but can still be proud of a bright start to life in the top flight. Black Lions, on the other hand, have lost three straight encounters, though they finally got their first league goal in a narrow 2-1 loss to Rollers. Calendar Stars remain firmly rooted at the bottom, outclassed in their early fixtures and learning just how steep the Premiership mountain can be.

The FNB Premiership round three concludes this weekend. Matebele FC face Morupule Wanderers tonight at the National Stadium, Police XI meet Gunners at VTM Arena on Saturday afternoon, whilst Calendar Stars lock horns with BDF XI under the floodlights at Obed Itani Chilume stadium.
