The deceased, a man from Majwaneng, is reported to have been visiting fellow herders in the area when the accident occurred.

According to police, the man was handling the gun recklessly, striking it against a stone, when it discharged and fatally wounded him on the chin. Confirming the incident, Martin’s Drift Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Uyapo Koketso, said the man was immediately rushed to the nearest clinic but was certified dead upon arrival by the doctors.

“We are investigating the matter to establish how the deceased came into possession of the firearm and under what circumstances the incident took place,” Koketso said.

Police have since warned the public against mishandling firearms, stressing that reckless use often results in avoidable loss of life.
