Conference tackles labour rights in the digital age

The conference which started yesterday (Thursday) and will end on Friday (today) is now in its fourth year. Over time, it has grown as a platform for academics, civil society, labour experts, government, unions and the private sector to gather under one roof in discussing labour related matters as shaped by current trends. This year, ILES conference will be held under the theme: Future Ready: Labour Rights and Productivity in the Digital Revolution.” The theme zooms into the profound impact of the digital revolution and the future of work. According to the organisers, the theme assesses how workers’ rights can be protected in such a digital shift. It also provides an opportunity for experts to probe the commitment of the current government to labour related issues, especially that it has promised to shape its policy around being people centric and a human rights-based government.
The organisers noted that “this year’s theme reflected a commitment to advancing inclusive sustainable labour policies in response to Digital Revolution. Digital transformation has changed dynamics in the world of work and approaches to socio-economic development.” Thematic areas for this year include The Future of Work: Just Transition in the Digital Age, From Policy to Practice: Strengthening Enforcement of Human & Labour Rights, and Protection Against Emerging Hazards in the Working Environment. This year the conference attracted over 300 participants to discuss labour trends, inform policy and shape public discourse.
