Serowe Police Station commander, Superintendent Poloko Oteng, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

He said the police received the report from the 27-year-old victim, who narrated that the suspect lured him to another section of the prison around 8pm under the pretext of 'looking for something'.

“On the way, the suspect pounced on him, attacked, and subsequently raped him. Whilst he was still assaulting the victim, another inmate came to his rescue and the suspect fled the scene,” Oteng explained.

“The matter was reported to prison officers, who then referred it to us, leading to the opening of a rape case.”

He added that the victim was taken to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital, where medical examinations confirmed that he had been sexually assaulted.

Oteng further revealed that the suspect is no stranger to such offences, as he already has five pending rape cases before the Serowe Magistrate's Court.

“This latest offence now brings the total to six rape cases against him,” he said.
