The quintet was caught red-handed on Saturday dismantling a Honda Fit that had been stolen the previous night from Tsabong Bars in Tsolamosese, Mogoditshane.
No.12 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Mmoloke Sebako said the suspects had already sold some of the vehicle’s parts and were in the process of removing others when they were arrested.
“The owner of the vehicle had just parked his car to buy something from one of the shops. Upon his return, the vehicle was nowhere to be found,” Sebako explained.
Amongst the arrested suspects is a mechanic based in Tsolamosese, who police believe may have played a key role in dismantling the stolen vehicles. Sebako revealed that investigations link the suspects to a string of similar incidents in Mogoditshane, where mostly Honda Fit models have been stolen from bars and other entertainment spots.
“We suspect these men are the ones who have been terrorising Mogoditshane, stealing people’s vehicles. We have recorded numerous cases of stolen Honda Fits, and despite setting up roadblocks and conducting searches, we never found the vehicles intact. We now believe they were being stripped for parts,” he said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.
