Twenty-four teams are drawn from the men’s, women’s and youth leagues and will compete over two weekends of action. The men’s category features a 16-team contest comprising the top eight teams from the Kweneng Region Division One and the top four finishers from each of the two Division Two leagues.
Amongst the teams confirmed are Masitaoka, Matebejana, Blue Aces, Moritshane Lions, Senyane, Blackburn Callies, Mmopane SC, Mmankadile, Thamaga Swallows, Kumakwane Checkers, Babakima, Naledi Swallows, Walker XI, City Bucks, African Birds and Molepolole Tigers.
The women’s edition will see four teams locking horns in reigning champions BDF XI, runners-up Mexican Girls, Makufa SC, and Gakuto Eagles, who finished third and fourth respectively in the previous campaign.
Meanwhile, the youth category features Matebejana, BDF XI, Twinstars and Divine Brains.
The knockout competition is scheduled to kick-off at 8am on Saturday, with the opening weekend dedicated to the qualifying rounds. The tournament concludes on the weekend of August 16 to 17, with P40,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Speaking to MmegiSport, the tournament’s public relations officer Apema Petleke Letlole said the event is aimed at raising the level of football in the region, with a particular focus on youth and women’s football development.
“We intend through this tournament to encourage football clubs in Kweneng to establish youth teams as well as women’s football. This is also to give the coaching teams from all the clubs a chance to fully assess their squads, try tactics ahead of the start of their respective leagues,” he said.
“This is upon realisation that our region is mostly made of teams in the lower leagues and they often do not have resources to hold meaningful pre-season preparations and through this tournament we are hoping to fill that gap.”
