The Kgatleng giants had the local football scene talking with the recent acquisition of Zebras’ playmaker, Gilbert Baruti, from Jwaneng Galaxy. Baruti’s arrival is in addition to the recruitment of, amongst others, former Township Rollers’ goalkeeping duo of Kabelo Maphakela and Keoagile Kgosipula, veteran forward, Hendrick Moyo, Kgotso Phuti and Kitso Mpuisang.
Other additions are Tshepo Malgas, Shanganani Nganda, Theo Shadikong, and Comoros’ forward, Ibrohim Youssouf, as Magosi have 13 new faces in the current transfer market.
It has been a major shake-up at the Kgatleng outfit ahead of the new season as Chiefs also parted ways with 12 players including industrious midfielder, Dirang Moloi who has retired from the game alongside forward, Dumisane Kubane.
Speaking to MmegiSport this week, club chairperson Victor Kobe hinted that they could still bolster their squad ahead of the 2025-2026 football season and the decision rests solely with head coach, Pontsho ‘Piro’ Moloi.
“We can never say enough is enough. Whatever the coach will see missing in his combination and he believes we look for a candidate for the position, yes, we will go into the market to get one,” he told MmegiSport this week.
Kobe, however, stressed that the technical team has the final say, adding that should Moloi be content with the current squad, there will be no further business.
“If the coach is confident with the players procured thus far, then all is in order. Remember, the buck stops with Piro,” he added.
Chiefs have been active in the window, roping in several new faces as they look to rebuild after a few difficult campaigns.
The team recently returned from a series of high-profile friendlies that are said to have impressed the technical bench despite mixed results.
From the weekend’s fourth-place finish in a four-team tournament that featured Jwaneng Galaxy and South African sides Orbit College and Marumo Gallants, Chiefs played to a 0-0 draw against South African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns in a preseason training match played on Tuesday afternoon in Rustenburg.
Chiefs’ rivals are also beefing up their ranks. Champions, Gaborone United (GU), this week announced the signing of the attacking duo of Lethabo Ogotseng and Kamogelo Moloi from Police XI and Orapa United respectively.
Moloi’s transfer was under scrutiny as the player had requested a GU move and Ostriches demanded a P60,000 payout on his contract that ends in December.
Former league champions, Jwaneng Galaxy following the departures of midfielders, Nqobizitha Masuku and Gilbert Baruti have secured the signing of Manda Nongo from TAFIC.
Matjimenyenga have also confirmed the departure of well-sought-after forward Jean Jeagogo Lwamba to Durban City in South Africa.
The new season is scheduled to start in two weeks and teams are in the last phases of preparations. Rollers will play in a four-team preseason tournament alongside TAFIC, Morupule Wanderers and Santa Green at the Palapye Stadium on Saturday.
