Over 800 athletes expected for Makgadikgadi Marathon

Addressing members of the media, Chief communications officer, Mmoloki Bopa said this year's event promises to be bigger and better than the maiden edition, which drew about 560 athletes. Bopa revealed that the marathon aims to promote sport tourism, put Nata village on the map, and boost the local economy, while also showcasing the area's natural beauty. The event will feature four categories being 5km fun race, 10km, 21km, and 42km, with cash prizes ranging from P200 to P8,000 for the top four positions in each category.
Bopa emphasised that the marathon will provide a platform for young athletes from the village and surrounding areas to showcase their talents, particularly those who lack access to sports facilities and opportunities to participate in athlete trials. Makgakgadi International Marathon chairperson, Kao Mokoka highlighted the unique aspect of the marathon, which takes place on gravel roads, allowing athletes to tour the breathtaking beauty of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Mokoka expressed gratitude to last year's supporters and sponsors, including the Gambling Authority, Botswana Ash (BOTASH), and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture Development. He appealed for continued support, both monetary and in-kind, to ensure the success of this year's event.
Notably, the marathon is registered with the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) through its association with Sua Pan Athletics Club but is not a qualifier for international marathons due to its gravel road course.
Organizers anticipate participants from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, South Africa, and local athletes.
