The highly anticipated event, scheduled for Friday, August 1, 2025, at Cresta Lodge in Gaborone, promises to be a night of classic anthems, electrifying vibes, and heartfelt tribute to the 1990's decade that shaped a generation.
Curated by local promoter Nigel Motlogelwa, the event is described as a love letter to the vibrant radio and club scene of the 1990s. 'Tich Mataz is a legend who soundtracked so many lives through his radio shows and mixes,' Motlogelwa shares. 'His return to the decks is a dream come true for fans who grew up on his sound. We’ve also handpicked Botswana’s finest old-school DJs—Otis Frazer, PJ The DJ, Kyle, Choto, Frostbite, Bigga, and Khenzo—to bring back that authentic energy, ' he added.
For Tich Mataz, born Tichaona Matambanadzo, the event marks a nostalgic homecoming. The veteran DJ, known for revolutionizing radio in Southern Africa, recalls his early days with fondness. 'I was studying science, but music was always my passion,' he says. 'Radio Bop was where I found my voice, and Botswana has always been special to me—working at Yarona FM, training talent like Luzboy. Returning to Gaborone feels like a reunion with family,' he stated.
Attendees can expect a sonic time machine, blending classic house, kwaito, Afro-pop, and disco—the hits that once dominated airwaves and packed dancefloors. 'We’re bringing live hype men and surprise vocalists to keep the energy raw and interactive,' Motlogelwa teases. The event caters not just to those who lived through the ‘90s but also to younger crowds eager to experience the magic of the era.
Beyond the music, Take Us Back aims to reignite the communal joy of pre-streaming music culture. 'Today’s scene is fragmented; we’re bringing people together the old-school way,' Motlogelwa explained. With plans already in motion for a potential quarterly series or even a touring festival, this could be the start of a full-blown retro revival across Southern Africa. Advanced tickets are available for P250 at Webtickets and Cresta Lodge, Gaborone.
