Garethusane stands accused of killing his girlfriend last month at Old Naledi, Gaborone. The slain was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital when rushed for medical attention.
Appearing before Extension II Magistrate Court last Friday, Garethusane continued pleading for bail in his second court appearance. He stressed that his mind cannot rest as he does not know the state of his family’s wellbeing.
“Last time when I was arraigned, I asked for bail. My reasons were that I have a young child who is doing Standard 1 and my mother is also blind. I have to look after them. Ever since my incarceration I don't know of their wellbeing,” stressed the murder accused.
The accused further said, not only does he need to look after his child and blind mother, but also that they do not have anyone who can put food on the table for them.
“I am also pleading for bail for reasons that I am the sole breadwinner at home. Without me, I do not know how they are really surviving at all,” he said.
Meanwhile the state applied that the accused be further remanded in custody.
“Investigations are still ongoing and our communication with the Investigative Officer (IO), he said he is yet to collect witness statements so with that we apply that he be remanded in custody,” the state said.
Taking the two sides into consideration, presiding chief magistrate Kamogelo Mmesi further remanded the accused in custody.
“This is a murder case and it is too soon for you to be applying for bail. As per prosecutions they are yet to collect witness statements. So with that the accused is further remanded in custody until July 17 for a status update,” she ordered.
The case continues.
