According to one of the event coordinators, Oarabile Kgosiesele, the events will showcase diverse comedic talent from around the world while attracting different attendees. Kgosiesele explained that the event will not only celebrate comedy but also showcase cuisine that will be offered at Airport Junction while fostering community engagement and supporting local artists.
'Our fans must expect an evening of culture, cuisine, and comedy. This is more than a comedy show; it is a full evening experience. Arrive early to grab a bite from Airport Junction’s wide range of food vendors and relax into the weekend with good vibes and great people. Headliners for the event include local heavyweight comedians in the likes of Thapelo Malani and legendary South African comedian Roni Modimola,' he said.
Kgosiesele, who is also famed as Walker, added that the laughter-packed evening featurs a powerhouse line-up of comedians from across Africa and beyond, in the likes of Roni Modimola, the South African comedy veteran known for his razor-sharp wit and legendary punchlines. He explained that Modimola is an all-round performer who could be relied on to win over the trickiest crowd with his quiet charm, philosophical musings, silly word-plays and good old-fashioned gags that leave the crowd begging for more. Meanwhile, Botswana's very own comedian, Boldwin Bals, famed for his smooth-talking and as a crowd pleaser who always delivers big laughter, will also perform at the comedy night.
'Aiden Ho, flying in from China with global jokes and an international perspective you did not see coming, will also be there. We also have Rekunde, the queen of comedy, who is a local fan favourite with a sharp tongue and hilarious storytelling style. Kudakwashe, a Zimbabwe’s comedic export who brings energy, satire, and no-filter fun and Thapelo Malani, the well-travelled visually impaired comedian, will be bringing his edgy, witty and hilarious storytelling abilities,' he said.
Furthermore, he stated that the local standup comedy had really grown from when they started, when there were only three professional comedians being Dignash, Mod and Ribcracker, based in Gaborone, to now, where there were comedians in far areas such as Tsabong, Maun, Kasane, and Francistown. He also said the public did not support comedy. However, he said, although it was not yet in the mainstream as other art forms, a lot of people were warming up to it since the advent of social media.
Additionally, he explained that Major Moves Comedy had been around for more than 13 years. He added that all the countries that they travelled to had a national theatre where promoters could host events, while in Botswana, they had to rely on hotels and other venues like malls. He said they struggled to get support from the government, especially when they got invites internationally to represent the country.
'However, we engage individuals who help us fulfil those engagements. We are still having challenges with developing more female comedians, as there are very few who are practising compared to their male counterparts. We were part of a landmark announcement that was set to shake up the comedy industry on the continent at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards in South Africa, where comedian Phenyo Phaladi aka Phenyo the Master was selected to present an award and launch the Savanna Pan-African Comic Award,' he added.
Kgosiesele also said they successfully hosted the Annual Heavyweights International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST), hosting comedians from Eswatini, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Lesotho, South Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, the United States of America, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He added that Malani was the first Motswana comedian to perform in Kenya and Uganda, adding that they at Major Moves Comedy sent Batswana comedians to perform in Eswatini, Namibia, Lesotho, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
'We have had tremendous support for our past shows from both the public and the media alike. We promise a rocking show with this production. We have a fresh new lineup and people must come and experience the best and ultimate entertainment from beginning to end,' he said.
