The shocking incident occurred in Phase 1 ward, Letlhakane, shortly after the two siblings were last seen leaving a local bar following its closure.
Whilst the cause of the fight remains unknown, police say the pair was found in a violent confrontation along the street, prompting passersby to alert the police.
New Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Unoziba Rari, said both brothers were injured during the scuffle and were initially rushed to Letlhakane Primary Hospital.
“They were last seen walking home from the bar. What triggered the misunderstanding that escalated into a brutal fight is still sketchy at this point,” he said when confirming the incident.
“People discovered them fighting and quickly informed the police. Both men were taken to hospital for treatment.”
However, the older brother sustained worse injuries, including a swollen head and a cracked skull. He was later transferred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in a critical condition.
He also reportedly suffered a stab wound to the chin.
“The younger brother, who is currently in police custody as part of the investigation, also sustained injuries and lost his two front teeth during the altercation,” Rari added.
Police have since launched a full investigation to uncover the cause of the family dispute that led to such a violent outcome.
Meanwhile, Rari has issued a stern plea to the community, urging residents to reduce their alcohol intake.
“Many of these violent incidents are linked to excessive alcohol consumption. People often make reckless decisions under the influence, which they later regret when sober.
“We urge the public to drink responsibly,” he warned.
