The incident, which occurred around 9am on Saturday morning, left a 40-year-old man nursing a fractured left hand after he was struck from behind with the heavy tool by another man who immediately fled the scene.

No.13 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae, said they are investigating a case of grievous bodily harm.

“It is alleged that whilst one of our officers was at the station, he saw a man approaching another from behind carrying a pick axe.

“The suspect then struck the unsuspecting victim with the weapon and ran off,” Lokae said.

The injured man was quickly rushed to Princess Marina Hospital where doctors confirmed he had sustained a fracture on his left hand.

“The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was arrested the same morning and is currently in police custody as investigations continue,” he added.

Police have not yet revealed the motive behind the attack, but they have assured the public that they are treating the matter seriously. The suspect is expected to appear before court sometime this week.

Lokae pleaded with members of the public to learn to resolve their differences peacefully. He said they continue to record cases involving people fighting or injuring one another. Some of the fights, he said, end in serious injuries of which can be permanent or worse, fatal.
