The commercial bank has provided P1 million to partner with the institution of higher learning for the race scheduled for September 7. The announcement was made during a special unveiling ceremony at the UB on Wednesday where the growing importance of sport in education, empowerment, and community building was emphasised. The marathon consists of four categories, which include the 42km, 21km, 10km, and five-kilometre races. UB Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris highlighted that it is time to evolve as institutions of higher learning. “Standard Chartered is one of our valued partnerships, and we are going to use your funding for the future of this institution as well as the future of the country,' he said.

Parasport athlete and last year’s 10km race winner, Gofaone Lesetedi, praised the inclusive spirit of the marathon. “We are not only unveiling a sponsor but bearing testimony to the UB Marathon’s role in changing lives. It’s not just about health and fitness but impacting differently-abled people, women and children,” he said. Lesetedi expressed hope that this year’s marathon will build strategic partnerships for empowerment and legacy. He said the marathon is more than just a sporting event but it is a movement for social impact. Standard Chartered Bank chief executive officer, Mpho Masupe announced the bank’s commitment of P1 million to the marathon.

“The purpose is to support and access young people who are ready to grow and contribute to this country’s sports. We aim to build a future-ready generation,” he said, encouraging the youth to bring their energy and passion to the event. UB Chancellor, Tebelelo Seretse, urged Batswana to come and support the event by registering for the race.
