According to Maun Police Station commander, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, the two suspects were caught on Saturday evening after the cops received a tip-off about individuals allegedly carrying lion teeth.

Acting on the information, plainclothed officers tracked the suspects and found them in possession of four lion teeth.

“The officers extended their search to the suspects’ homes, where they further discovered lion paws,” said Lepodise.

He added the two are currently in police custody and are helping with investigations.

The police believe the suspects may be linked to a broader poaching network targeting lions in the area.

This suspicion comes in the wake of a disturbing discovery on May 31 when four lion carcasses were found in the bush with missing heads and paws.

“We suspect that there are poachers on the loose targeting lions. Our investigators are working to establish where these body parts are being sold.

“There may be a black market where such items are in demand,” Lepodise added.

He urged members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities that may help curb wildlife crimes.

The illegal trade of wildlife parts, including lion bones, teeth, and claws, is often driven by demand for use in traditional medicine and ornaments, particularly in some Asian and African markets.

Botswana, known for its rich wildlife, has been tightening its anti-poaching efforts in recent years to protect endangered species.
