Happy Lounge became the latest joint to be targeted on Saturday night in what is fast-turning the peri-urban area into a hotspot, further fuelling police suspicions of an organised car theft syndicate operating in the area.
No.13 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae, said the latest victim, a 25-year-old man, had parked his vehicle around 9pm.
However, when he returned approximately at 1am the car had vanished despite having the keys in his possession.
“This happens after a string of cases we are still investigating, in which people's vehicles – mostly Honda Fits – were stolen whilst parked at various bars and entertainment venues in Mogoditshane,” said Lokae.
He expressed strong suspicions that the recurring offence may be the work of an organised criminal network.
“We suspect that there is a syndicate of thieves on the loose targeting parked cars in entertainment spots in Mogoditshane.
“They could be stealing vehicles either to strip them down for parts or to smuggle them across borders into neighbouring countries,' he added.
Police are urging residents, especially car owners, and in particular owners of Honda Fit cars, to be extra cautious when parked in public places at night.
They also encourage the use of steering locks and car alarms as added security measures.
Investigations into the recent incidents are ongoing, and police have appealed to anyone with information that may assist in tracking down the suspects to come forward.
