Boko must take stand in Pilane transfer saga

They reveal a toxic pattern of intimidation, suppressed justice, and high-level interference that threatens to cripple Botswana’s fight against corruption. President Duma Boko and Minister for State President Moeti Mohwasa, immediate intervention is not just warranted; it is essential to salvage the integrity of public institutions.
Pilane details completed investigations into possible corruption case files involving Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP) Emmah Peloetletse, and other high-profile individuals, he claims were handed to DCEC Director-General Botlhale Makgekgenene, only to be suppressed indefinitely. Pilane’s assertion that his transfer is retaliation for questioning irregularities in his own promotion process adds weight to his claims of systemic persecution. Yanking a career law enforcement officer (recruited from the army) into the Ministry of Higher Education is transparently punitive. It signals to every honest public servant: challenge the powerful, and your career – or safety – will be forfeited.
This is a crisis demanding presidential and ministerial courage. Allowing this transfer or ignoring Pilane’s evidence betrays every citizen who expects accountability. We therefore demand President Duma Boko and Minister Moeti Mohwasa suspend the transfer immediately pending a full, independent judicial inquiry into all allegations – the conflict of interest, suppressed cases, death threats, and promotion irregularities.
The President should further establish an independent judge-led investigation with full powers to subpoena evidence and witnesses, examine the suppressed corruption files, and probe the conduct of all named officials and DCEC DG Makgekgenene. This body must operate free from the influence of the Office of the President, Directorate of Intelligence and Security, or DCEC.
The state should further guarantee robust protection for Pilane, his family, and any witnesses. The reported death threats require urgent security measures, not negligence.
The President should further place DCEC Director-General Makgekgenene on leave during the investigation. Her alleged suppression of cases fatally compromises her ability to lead the anti-corruption agency.
Silence or half-measures from President Boko will be seen as endorsing this corruption of due process. Botswana’s stability relies on institutions that serve the people, not protect the powerful. The world is watching whether our leaders will defend the rule of law or let impunity triumph. Act now. Investigate thoroughly. Restore justice. The credibility of your government hangs in the balance.
