Another heartbreak followed when Bayapo Ndori collapsed to the ground clutching his hamstring during the 400m race at the same event. The athletes’ coach, Kebonyemodisa Dose Mosimanyane told MmegiSport this week that the two are focused on recovery so that they return to training. Mosimanyane said all injuries, whether minor or major, are part the journey and build resilience. “They are part of what we do, so we manage them as we go along. We should be able to line-up at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September,” he said. Mosimanyane said they have a target of races that they believe they will need to reach race sharpness and peak performance by September.
When asked about reducing the number of competitions to avoid straining the athletes ahead of World Athletics Championships, Mosimanyane said they have factored that into their programme. “We will make adjustments if need be, with the help and advice of our medical team of course. Every race serves a purpose towards getting to the desired fitness levels needed to compete at the World Athletics Championships,” Mosimanyane said.
Ndori told MmegiSport that he is on the road to full recovery. He said the Rabat Diamond League stumble did not have much impact. Meanwhile, Collen Kebinatshipi will step into the track tonight at the Rome Diamond League. He has so far accumulated 12 points whilst Ndori has 15 points, the same as Chris Bailey of the United States of America. Kebinatshipi had a good start to the season following his stint in the Grand Slam Tour in Jamaica and his first Diamond League action of the season was in Shanghai where he finished third behind Bailey and Ndori. It will not be an easy race for Kebinatshipi as he goes up against Kirani James (Grenada), Quincy Hall (USA), and Alexander Doom (Belgium). He has recorded a season’s best (SB) of 44.53, the third fastest amongst the competitors trailing only Zakithi Nene of South Africa, who blasted to a World Lead of 44.22 during the Absa Kip-Keino Classic Continental Tour-Gold Meet over the weekend. There is also Attila Molnár of Hungary with a season’s best of 45.31, Vernon Norwood (USA) with an SB of 44.70, Charles Dobson (Great Britain), and Edoardo Scotti of Italy with an SB of 45.99 complete the line-up.
