In an interview with The Monitor on Sunday at Gaborone Senior Secondary School, where the party’s national congress was held, he also addressed concerns about the perceived low turnout.
The chairperson revealed the congress was attended by 700 voting delegates from across the country, in line with the party’s constitutional requirements.
“Although more than 1,200 people attended, only 700 were eligible to vote,” Mokgware clarified.
“In fact, many came simply out of love and support for the party. This alone reflects how much we’ve grown.”
Furthermore, he noted that AP has expanded into areas where it previously had no presence.
“We now have established structures even in constituencies where the party did not exist before. Notably, our membership base includes both experienced political figures and young people.
“In addition, some have joined us from other political parties, which is a sign of the AP's increasing appeal,” he said.
Moreover, the chairperson said the party now has functional structures at the ward, constituency, and regional levels.
'A party without such structures clearly has no future, or is on the verge of decline,” he added.
When asked about the late start of the congress, Mokgware cited logistical challenges. Specifically, he explained that some delegates relied on public transportation due to work obligations on Friday.
“Consequently, the registration and verification processes delayed the official start until Saturday afternoon,” he said.
“Otherwise, we would have started on time.”
On the issue of membership growth, Mokgware revealed that the AP registers nearly 300 new members every week.
He particularly highlighted the rising interest from young people in tertiary institutions, calling it a positive indicator of the party’s future.
Additionally, he praised the atmosphere within the party, commending the level of maturity, tolerance, and inclusivity amongst its members.
“Our members are welcoming to newcomers. They do not judge or alienate them in any way,” he pointed out.
Mokgware expressed appreciation for the peaceful spirit that continues to prevail in the party, along with the innovative ideas members contribute to ensure continued growth and relevance.
