According to the police, the teenager reportedly attempted suicide following a misunderstanding with her uncle. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the details surrounding the dispute.
Serowe Police Station commander, Superintendent Poloko Oteng, confirmed the incident, saying the girl was discovered lying motionless with foam coming out of her mouth.
“She was rushed to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment,” said Oteng.
The police commander expressed concern over the rising number of suicide cases, particularly involving minors.
“This is the second incident involving a minor this year. Unfortunately, in the first incident, a 15-year-old girl ended up taking her own life,” he revealed.
So far this year, Oteng said five suicide cases have been recorded in the Serowe policing area. He appealed to members of the public to seek help when facing emotional or psychological challenges.
“We urge people to respect the sanctity of human life. When dealing with family disputes or personal challenges please speak to someone, be it a neutral family member, pastor, social worker, community leader, or even the police,” he said.
