In a case that was reported on Saturday morning, Mogoditshane Police Station commander, Superintendent Mbiganyi Letsholathebe said a 38-year-old man had gone to Blaze Bar in the locale with his Volvo VW vehicle but could not find his car keys following the closure of the bar.
Letsholathebe explained that after looking for his car keys to no avail, the man went home to sleep leaving the vehicle parked by the bar.
When the owner returned to the spot in the morning his car was nowhere to be found and he reported the matter to the police.
'We suspect that someone might have searched him, took his car keys, or he had misplaced them and someone picked them up and stole the vehicle,' the police chief said.
Meanwhile, Letsholathebe said they were investigating another similar case in which a Honda Fit was stolen whilst parked at Phindani Bar in Ledumadumane on Saturday night.
He said the owner of the car, a 37-year-old man, had parked his car around 7:30pm. When returning to the spot from the bar later around 11:30pm his car was nowhere to be found. He then reported the matter to the police.
'Unlike the above driver, this victim had his car keys in his possession. We don't know how they managed to start the engine of the car without its keys.
'This is similar to last week's case in which another Honda Fit vehicle was stolen whilst parked at Tsabong Bars. Even in that case, the owner of the vehicle was in possession of his car keys,' he said.
Letsholathebe added they suspect that there is a syndicate that targets Honda Fit cars adding that the perpetrators are skilled in starting the engine without keys.
