The 33-year-old motorist told the police that whilst driving from north to south along the Gaborone–Molepolole road, he couldn't have seen the young man coming.

No.13 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae, said they received the report of the accident from the driver around 2am.

'The driver rushed him to Nkoyaphiri clinic where he was certified dead on arrival by the doctors. We currently don't know who the deceased is nor his age because he didn't have any form of identification in his possession,' he said.

Lokae raised a concern over accidents that continue to claim pedestrians' lives in his policing area.

He said every week they record cases in which pedestrians are involved in road crashes despite their continued efforts to sensitise members of the public and motorists about road safety measures.

'It seems like our efforts fall upon deaf ears because these accidents spiral out of control as we continue to lose lives in the process. Most of these accidents occur at night, especially after midnight with the majority of the victims being men,' he said.

Lokae called on pedestrians and motorists to be cautious of each other on the road.

He said just like motorists, pedestrians also have the right to use the road but they should do so with caution, follow road signs at all times, and make sure that they pay attention, especially when crossing the road and to do so when it is safe to cross.
