Balopi won the election with 664 votes, comfortably defeating former BDP chairman and former vice president Slumber Tsogwane, who managed only 60 votes. Ame Makoba and Nonofo Molefhi secured 29 and seven votes, respectively.
Despite a landslide victory, Balopi admitted in a post-election interview that he had not expected such a result. 'I did not expect that,' he said, reflecting on the strong support he received. However, many BDP members had already expressed their confidence in Balopi as the person to lead the party into the 2029 General Election.
Balopi’s victory is seen as a fresh start for the BDP, which has dethroned for the first time since independence. In his speech following the announcement of the results, Balopi expressed his vision for the party. He emphasised that the BDP would serve as a responsible opposition, working alongside the ruling party to ensure that Batswana receive the best possible governance.
“We made the laws, we shouldn’t oppose like people who have not been in power for 58 years,” Balopi said. He believes the BDP would not engage in obstructionist politics but would instead offer constructive criticism and support where needed.
Balopi also took the time to address rumours circulating on social media. He denied claims that he promised to raise the old-age pension to P2,000. Balopi dismissed the rumors as completely false, assuring Batswana that no such promises had been made.
The mood at the congress in Maun was one of excitement and unity. After Balopi was declared the winner, party members celebrated with songs like 'Domi ke yame, kea e rata', which expresses unity and togetherness. The celebration showed the party’s renewed sense of purpose, as members rallied behind Balopi with the hope of winning the 2029 elections and returning to power.
In addition to the presidential election, other key positions within the BDP were also decided. Karabo Gare won the chairperson position with 385 votes, defeating Dorcus Makgatho with 273 votes and Kefentse Mzwinila with 70 votes. Kentse Rammidi was elected as Secretary-General with 267 votes, followed by Kabo Morwaeng with 212 votes, Derrick Tlhoiwe's 111 votes, Pelotshweu Baeng with 69 votes, and Thabo Autlwetse with only eight votes. Kagiso Mmusi was elected treasurer with 364 votes, defeating Omponye Sefu, who received 232 votes.
The congress ended on a positive note, with all candidates accepting the results and pledging to work together under Balopi’s leadership. The BDP members are now focused on rebuilding the party and preparing for the 2029 General Election, where they hope to reclaim power and once again serve the people of Botswana. The party’s leadership is committed to unity and responsible governance, which will be key in their efforts to win back the trust of the electorate.
