It joins his impressive roster of popular singles, which includes Mama, Cheater, Cheta, Loving Kuthe, Fill Me, Drown, Blue, and many more. With a distinctive blend of infectious rhythms and captivating melodies, DJ Dagizus continues to solidify his position as a leading figure in the global music scene. “This vibrant jam brings together the spirited rhythms of Afrobeat and the catchy beats of house music, showcasing the incredible talents of one of Botswana's rising stars, T-Gray. When Mr. T-Gray reached out to DJ Dagizus for a feature on an upcoming release, he had no idea that the Dallas-based producer was already eager to explore new musical avenues. After some discussions, they agreed to collaborate on fresh tracks, with T-Gray stepping in to lay down his vocals,” he said.
DJ Dagizus said he sent T-Gray a selection of beats to choose from, but the one he picked needed some tweaking. To refine it, he said T-Gray was introduced to Pro Lanez, one of DJ Dagizus's go-to producers based in Gaborone. Notably, he said Pro Lanez was also behind the production of DJ Dagizus's previous songs like Mama and Malome. During their session, while listening to the beat sent by DJ Dagizus, he said Pro Lanez, known for his versatility decided to create a brand-new beat tailored for T-Gray's vocals. He added that once the new beat was ready, the duo reached out to him to inform him of their progress.
He approved the new plan, and from there, everything fell into place. “T-Gray penned the lyrics for the song, which tells the story of a sneaky and alluring young woman who only turns to her partner when she is in need, especially for money. Once she gets what she wants, she vanishes, only to resurface when she is after more. Hence, the song is titled Sponki, meaning ‘young, lovable, but sneaky.’ After pre-mixing the song, Pro Lanez sent all the files to me for further mixing and mastering. This is their established process,” he said.
Speaking about the cover, he said the young woman featured on it is Sesame Makgau, an emerging entrepreneur and a student at the University of Botswana. He explained that she was acquainted with him adding that after seeing her picture, they thought it would complement the concept of the song. He said he reached out to her, asking if he could include her image for his record. The song was released on May 1, 2025. It is available on all digital platforms.
