The BTC Francistown Marathon is a World Athletics certified event and has attracted around 1, 000 participants, some from abroad. In a statement, title sponsor, the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited said the marathon is expected to help transform Francistown into a city of vibrancy and further attract more businesses into the city through sport tourism. The event continues to promote wellness, inclusivity, and community engagement while supporting BTC’s broader commitment to nation building, reads the statement. Participants will compete in various categories including 3km, 5km, 10km, 21.1km, 42.2km, and the wheelchair race, catering to a diverse range of fitness levels and age groups. The event is open to professional athletes, amateur runners, families, and corporate teams alike, which BTC said are 'all united by the shared spirit of endurance and achievement'.
Acting BTC CEO, Boitumelo Paya said the BTC Francistown Marathon is one of the ways the company continues to honour their journey and give back meaningfully. She said the marathon brings together athletes, families, and communities, whilst also creating real value beyond the finish line. Paya indicated that over the years, proceeds from the marathon have gone towards impactful community projects, from supporting local schools and health facilities and to improving access to essential resources. She said the marathon will feature entertainment, community exhibitions, and family-friendly activities, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere for both participants and spectators. She further added that this year, they are introducing an after-party to celebrate and further network over music after the marathon. “As we celebrate our 45th anniversary, we wanted to be reflective on the way we do things and at BTC, we do look to the future as we continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of our esteemed customers and the general public,” she said.
Now in its fourth year, the BTC Francistown Marathon has grown steadily in participation and community impact, and forms part of BTC’s long-standing support for sport as a driver of social progress, tourism, and youth empowerment.
