The event dubbed ‘Kick Out Violence Football Tournament’ was held on Saturday in a bid to spread the message in the fight against the scourge whilst promoting women’s football. The one-day event featured a football game between national champions, Gaborone United and Kweneng Region Division One league contenders, Mexican Girls.
In addition, social football teams including Mas Fina SC, Molepolole Prisons SC, Rabali SC and Mapiano SC took part in the day’s activities.
The tournament further featured a football game between Masitaoka FC legends and African Birds SC whilst a number of key stakeholders from in and around the village also took part.
Member of Parliament for Molepolole South, Shima Monageng, told The Monitor that the village has had its fair share of heinous crimes that include murders and rape amongst others, thus the need for such events.
He lauded the organisers of the tournament for seizing the holiday period to spread the message in the fight against GBV.
“In most cases our youth would have been at the bars, or other entertainment spots. It's pleasing to see them here, participating on the day’s activities in large numbers,' said Monageng.
He added that this shows that the message that was spread during the tournament has not fallen upon deaf ears and hopes 'this could bring a positive change, not only in Molepolole but also Kweneng and the country at large”.
Monageng added the political leadership in the area has lined up a number of initiatives in the fight against GBV that will be launched soon.
