In a move to align with global educational trends, Hibiscus is embracing modern advancements to equip students with essential 21st-century skills, positioning itself as a leading institution in the country. Originally established as a preschool, the facility has since expanded to offer primary and secondary education, with a strong focus on digitization.
Currently operating multiple campuses across Gaborone, Botswana, Hibiscus provides a seamless educational pathway from early childhood to secondary education. The school’s main campuses include Hibiscus Pre-Primary, Primary, and Secondary School at Block 7, as well as a Primary School in Broadhurst. Additionally, the institution has multiple pre-primary locations across Gaborone.
Commitment to technology andiInnovation
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hibiscus, Roelien Brink, emphasised that with the introduction of secondary education, the school aims to enhance learning through the integration of technology.
“We are aligning ourselves with the Cambridge curriculum, which we have adopted. The Cambridge syllabus is gradually incorporating digital teaching platforms, and we are committed to leading this transition. We are digitising our school,” Brink stated.
She highlighted that through digitization, Hibiscus will modernize its teaching methods, ensuring both students and teachers are equipped with the necessary tools for success.
To establish that the school is up to date with the modern times, Brink indicated that Hibiscus is also including E sports as part of their curriculum as there is a niche in the field and people are making careers out of them.
The role of AI in education
With the rapid advancement of AI, Hibiscus is exploring innovative ways to integrate AI into its educational programs.
“While AI cannot replace subjects like physical education or art, there are many areas where it can enhance learning. We are keen to explore its applications in subjects like mathematics, science, and language learning,” Brink explained.
Expanding academic horizons
The CEO Brink announced that for the first time ever, Hibiscus will have its first cohort of students sit for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations next year. This marks a significant milestone for the school, which only introduced secondary education within the last three years.
Extracurricular excellence
Beyond academics, Hibiscus offers a wide range of extracurricular programs, including soccer, athletics, swimming, chess, table tennis, rugby, and a writers’ club. Brink proudly stated that the school excels in sports, with its trophy cabinet reflecting the team’s success against other institutions.
Future goals and expansion plans
Looking ahead, Brink revealed the school’s aspirations for growth and collaboration.
“We aim to increase our enrollment and introduce more non-academic programs to diversify opportunities for students. Additionally, we are planning to join the Independent Schools Association of Botswana, which will provide valuable support and advocacy for our institution,” he stated.
The CEO further outlined that Hibiscus is aiming for the stars as it is in the process to be affiliated with ISAB and Botswana Table Tennis Association.
In closing, Brink emphasised the school’s ambitious vision for the future: “At Hibiscus, the sky is not the limit—our potential goes beyond.”
