The man was part of a trio alleged to have attacked and robbed a 38-year-old woman of her handbag and mobile phone whilst she was walking home alone at around 8:30pm.
According to the police, the woman was attacked by three men who threatened her before snatching her belongings.
Mogoditshane Police Station commander, Superintendent Mbiganyi Letsholathebe said the woman's screams for help drew the attention of nearby residents, who responded swiftly.
He said the crowd managed to arrest two of the suspects and proceeded to beat them before police arrived at the scene.
“Both suspects had sustained serious injuries. On arrival, police rushed them to Nkoyaphiri clinic where the Mmathethe native succumbed to his injuries the following day whilst still receiving medical treatment.
“The second suspect was later referred to Princess Marina (Referral) Hospital where he is currently hospitalised in critical condition,” he said.
Letsholathebe said police managed to recover the woman’s handbag and mobile phone from the suspects. Meanwhile, he said the third suspect is still on the run, and investigations are ongoing to locate and arrest him.
However, police have since urged the public not to take the law into their own hands, emphasising the importance of reporting criminal activity and allowing the police to handle such matters.
“We understand the community’s frustration with rising crime, but mob justice isn't the answer. Investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish the people behind the death.
“Moreover, we are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in locating the third suspect to come forward,' Letsholathebe added.
