Appearing for an arraignment today before the Extension II Magistrates' Court, it is alleged that Kelebelle Babantsho fatally stabbed her boyfriend after an altercation with him.

The slain boyfriend, Maatla Merekeng, was pronounced dead after arrival when he was rushed to hospital for medical attenttion.

The state pleaded with the court for the accused to remain in custody as an investigation into the crime was still fresh.

The state further argued that it is in the best interest of the 28-year-old woman to be left in custody as the family of the deceased might be baying for her blood since their kin's life was cut short.

“The investigations in the matter are still new and we would like for her to be remanded in custody as this is a fresh matter and the emotions are still high. So this is done to protect her from the community and family of the deceased,” the state submitted.

Presiding Magistrate Kamogelo Mmesi asked the accused person if she would like to say anything.

Wearing socks with flip-flops, a pair of denim jeans, and a pink jacket on a cold Monday, Babantsho maintained her silence in court.

“There is nothing that I would wish to say,” she said. Her plea to whether she was guilty or not was reserved.

With the accused choosing to remain silent and not contend the remand in custody, Magistrate Mmesi acceded to the state’s plea.

“Since this is a murder case and the state fears that her life might be in danger, the court will only consider bail for her once the investigations in the matter are complete,” she ordered.

The case continues on May 5 for a status update.
