He died following a collision with a Botswana Prison Service vehicle heading south from north of the country, which was transporting three prisoners and two officers. Dibete Police Station assistant commander, Assistant Superintendent Pearl Nkele, said the man was certified dead on arrival at Mahalapye District Hospital by the doctors. 'We suspect that since he is a foreigner, he might have not been familiar with the area and miscalculated the speed of oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision,' she explained. 'Furthermore, we suspect he wanted to turn into the Mookane road, probably heading towards Martin's Drift Border Post to (cross into) South Africa.
However, investigations into the matter are ongoing and we have launched a probe to locate his family members and facilitate necessary arrangements,' Nkele added. She said both the officers and two inmates sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the Mahalapye, where they are currently hospitalised, she shared. 'The other inmate escaped the accident with minor injuries. He was treated and released the same day.' Nkele further pleaded with motorists to exercise caution when driving along the busy A1 as accidents continue to claim people's lives on the highway.
