Currently, those who have openly declared their interest include incumbent Secretary-General Lemogang Kwape, alongside Kabo Morwaeng and Thabo Autlwetse. Notably, this position is expected to be fiercely contested, as it serves as the backbone of the party.

In an interview with The Monitor last week, Autlwetse expressed confidence in his chances, stating, 'I believe I stand a good chance since people want new leaders who aren't part of the current leadership. Now, BDP members won't feel intimidated as they did before and will be able to vote freely. Previously, delegates were intimidated by individuals using their positions, money, and security officers. Members are now free,' he explained. He further emphasised the need for unity within the party, which he described as being in a state of disarray. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of electing leaders who can steer the party toward reclaiming government.
