Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu said the incident occurred at around 2am. He stated that the victim and her peers were walking home when a 22-year-old man of Korea Ward, Khwee approached them from behind.
'When noticing that the suspect was fast approaching, the girls ran away and he chased after them, pounced on the victim, dragged and raped her. We have since arrested the suspect who is currently in police custody for investigations and charged him with a single count of rape. The victim was sent to the hospital for medical treatment and currently recovering,' Maphephu said.
Maphephu pleaded with parents to monitor their children's movements, especially young girls who are more vulnerable as compared to their male counterparts.
'Rape remains a worry in my policing area as we continue to record cases of women and girls being attacked and raped with some being attacked even in the comfort of their homes. However, I'm pleading with parents to talk to their children, especially girls to avoid going out at night,' he said.
