Gov’t introduces initiatives to alleviate the cost of living

Speaking during a press briefing yesterday, Ramogapi disclosed that his ministry will reduce water tariffs by 30% for households within the first 100 days in office. ‘’This reduction will benefit primarily households and not companies ensuring that essential services are affordable for Batswana,’’ Ramogapi further revealed. The minister also indicated that the ministry will introduce a water token initiative through which less privileged persons identified in collaboration with social workers will receive a once-off P100 water token.
Additionally,Ramogapi explained that the tariff reduction is part of a strategy to address water shortage in various parts of Botswana. While acknowledging the financial constraints faced by the government, the minister emphasised that prioritization will help resource allocation.
On other issues, Ramogapi announced that Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) will subsidize its rental properties to make the houses more affordable. He stated that the government is also planning on building 100 houses which will be rented according to societal class to solve the problem of affordability that has been occurring for many years.
“The house plans will be conducted according to financial status to cater to every Motswana in terms of affordability and comfort. A rent-to-buy scheme, which has been in place will also be expanded to provide more options for home ownership. The ministry will conduct housing needs assessments to identify those in urgent need of accommodation, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively,” the Palapye legislator emphasised.
Ramogapi pointed out that as part of its ongoing commitment to excellence, the ministry aims to become a leader in the SADC region in terms of performance and deliverance. He said continuous audits and oversight will ensure transparency and accountability in implementing the initiatives referred to.
