BNF’s historic community-driven victory

This success can be traced to a community-centred campaign strategy that resonated deeply with voters. The success of the BNF can largely be attributed to its secretary-general, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, who serves as the party’s backbone. Motshegwa, widely known for his involvement in the union sector, played a pivotal role in the party’s achievements. He explained how the party’s clear coordination and structures helped them deliver significant wins in their assigned constituencies and wards. “Each region was supported by a coordinator, and candidates were trained in effective campaign tactics that emphasised voter connection and community engagement,” Motshegwa said.
He added that key to BNF’s approach was a focus on strong administration and organisational stability. Moreover, he said the party built a foundation of sound governance practices, aiming not only to secure this election but to ensure sustained progress for the future. According to Motshegwa, the BNF is unified in its mission, advocating for economic transformation and pushing for a reconfiguration of State structures to serve the people’s needs. He pointed out that the party’s vision reflects its role as a leader in socio-economic transformation, promoting justice and inclusivity, while its core values include social democracy, good governance, unity, and self-reliance. Reflecting on the historical significance of this achievement, Motshegwa noted that the party had not seen such results since 1994, when it won 13 parliamentary seats.
He acknowledged that the recent victory represents a shift in the political landscape and a strong endorsement from Batswana, underscoring the party’s growing connection with the people. “Looking forward, the BNF plans to remain closely engaged with communities and to maintain robust party structures, ensuring long-term support and effectiveness. We aim to strengthen leadership accountability, expand membership, and mobilise resources to sustain the gains achieved,” he said.
He said the party was founded in October 1965, the BNF has a long history of promoting democratic values and advocating for civil rights, liberty, and economic empowerment. Over the years, the party has pioneered several democratic reforms in Botswana. He said the BNF was the first political party to conduct internal primary elections in the 1970s, setting a standard for democratic practices in the country. It also called for establishing an Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in 1994, a critical step that led to significant changes in the election process. Additionally,
Motshegwa said the BNF has long advocated for key social policies such as old-age pensions, maternity leave increases, voting rights for citizens abroad, and fair labour practices, including the eight-hour workday. The key responsibilities include overseeing party administration, ensuring that structures are in place to support activities at all levels, from local branches to national leadership, and policy development ,which includes assisting in the development of party policies, ensuring they align with the party’s vision and addressing current issues and election strategy, which entails coordinating electoral campaigns, ensuring that the party’s message is effectively communicated to voters, and managing the party's presence in elections. Some of the responsibilities include internal communication which involves acting as a liaison between the leadership and the party members, keeping everyone informed and involved in decision-making processes. It also include public relations which entails representing the party in public forums, dealing with the media, and ensuring that the party's image remains strong. Motshegwa also played a strategic planning which means playing a significant role in the long-term strategic direction of the party, often in collaboration with the leadership.
