“The recent global surge in Mpox cases has resulted in WHO declaring Mpox disease a public health emergency of international concern, in line with this declaration African CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) declared Mpox disease a public health emergency of continental security,” read the statement of Ministry of Health (MoH).

The ministry further revealed acting on a directive from WHO to protect the public.

“It is therefore on this basis that the ministry through the Botswana Public Health Institute has taken a decision to put measures in place geared towards strengthening surveillance of Mpox virus,” the statement read. The ministry has since intensified screening activities at selected ports of entry effective yesterday. The selected entry ports include Kazungula One Stop Border, Maun Airport, Gaborone Airport, Tlokweng, Martin’s Drift, Lobatse Pioneer, and Mamuno border posts.
