Mmolotsi’s disgust for ‘MP dismissing’ law

During Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe’s launch on Saturday at Molapo Piazza Mmolotsi once again took the chance to emphasise that the proposed new law is ‘satanic’ and ‘devilish’.
In the draft Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024, there is a proposal to have Section 68 of the Constitution amended by inserting immediately after subsection one a new subsection which states that legislators will be fired for misbehaviour. Mmolotsi said the proposed law is influenced by the devil and that the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) MPs will use it to remove opposition legislators from the National Assembly. “What kind of a law disregards the wishes of 9,000 people and grants an individual the power to reverse the constituents’ decisions?” he questioned.
Mmolotsi said Batswana cannot queue to vote for their preferred candidates, only for ruling party legislators to remove the latter from office. “You can see that this is a law backed by Satan,” he emphasised. It was not the first time Mmolotsi expressed his disgust at the proposed law.
In Parliament last week, the vice president of the Alliance for Progressives (AP) said the law is meant to disrespect the wishes of the voters who had voted for an MP into Parliament. “One MP is not bigger than the people who had voted me into office, and I should not be removed from office because a certain individual doesn’t like me,” Mmolotsi indicated.
Mmolotsi emphasised that only voters have the right to remove him from his position and it can only be done through an election, not a draconian law. He pointed out that the law is targeting to remove opposition MPs because of their low numbers in the House. “If this law passes Batswana should know that the people they had voted for are not protected,' Mmolotsi said, adding that even if the law passes and Parliament somehow manages to remove him, he will contest and win repeatedly.
