Masisi should avoid diplomatic tensions

Mokgweetsi Masisi’s recent spats regarding the supposed involvement of Eswatini and South Africa in accommodating former president Ian Khama have sparked concerns about the potential ramifications on diplomatic relations. While transparency is valued, it must be accompanied by strategic communication to mitigate unintended consequences.

President Masisi’s comments during a diplomatic heads meeting have drawn attention to the delicate balance required in diplomatic discourse. His assertion that Eswatini and South Africa were “undermining diplomatic ties by aiding and abetting Khama” underscores the need for leaders to weigh their words carefully.

While being candid is appreciated, the broader implications of such statements must be considered to avoid escalating tensions.

In response to Masisi’s remarks, Eswatini’s King’s Office Director of Communications, Percy Simelane, swiftly clarified that there is no record of any assistance provided to Khama by Eswatini. Simelane’s emphasis on accuracy and context highlights the importance of precision in diplomatic exchanges.

Additionally, Masisi’s criticism of Khama’s affinity for Eswatini as an “absolute monarchy” sheds light on the complexities of governance preferences amongst leaders in the region.

Simelane also invoked United Nations protocols, particularly Clause 1 of the Vienna Convention of 1961, which discourages mudslinging between countries. His reminder serves as a cautionary note for all leaders to adhere to established diplomatic norms and protocols.

Furthermore, both the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU) offer mechanisms for resolving disputes, underscoring the importance of diplomatic channels in addressing grievances.

Eswatini’s government spokesperson, Alpheous Nxumalo, adopted a measured approach in response to President Masisi’s remarks. Nxumalo highlighted the good relations between Botswana and Eswatini, indicating a commitment to maintaining stability while addressing concerns through appropriate diplomatic channels.

His stance reflects a practical approach to diplomacy, prioritising dialogue and cooperation over confrontation. As Masisi navigates the complexities of international relations, he must exercise caution in his public statements to avoid inadvertently straining diplomatic ties. Every word uttered by a Head of State carries weight and can have far reaching consequences. Diplomacy demands a delicate balance between transparency and discretion. Let us hope that all leaders, including President Masisi, choose their words wisely to safeguard diplomatic relations and promote regional stability.
